K–12 Grading and Promotion Policy #
American International School of Ethiopia (AISE)
The American International School of Ethiopia (AISE) is committed to maintaining high academic standards while supporting the growth and development of every student. Student promotion to the next grade level is based on a comprehensive review of academic progress, assessments, attendance, and overall readiness.
1. Promotion Criteria #
Promotion decisions are made based on multiple indicators of student performance. The school reviews the following factors when determining whether a student is ready to advance to the next grade level.
1.1 Academic Performance #
Students must demonstrate satisfactory mastery of grade-level learning standards in core academic subjects, including:
- English Language Arts (Reading and Writing)
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
1.2 Assessment Results #
Student progress is measured using a variety of assessments, including:
- Classroom tests and quizzes
- Unit and semester examinations
- Project-based assessments
- Standardized or school-wide assessments
1.3 Teacher Evaluation #
Teachers evaluate students based on:
- Classroom participation
- Homework and assignments
- Projects and presentations
- Demonstrated improvement and effort
Teachers also assess the student’s overall readiness for the next grade level.
1.4 Attendance and Participation #
Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Promotion decisions may consider:
- Consistent school attendance
- Active participation in classroom activities
- Completion of assignments and projects
Students with excessive absences or chronic tardiness may be subject to additional review before promotion.
2. Standards-Based Grading (Kindergarten – Elementary School) #
In Kindergarten and Elementary Grades, AISE uses a Standards-Based Grading system that focuses on mastery of skills and learning objectives rather than traditional letter grades.
Students are evaluated according to the following proficiency levels:
| Level | Proficiency | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Advanced | Exceeds grade-level standards |
| 3 | Proficient | Meets grade-level standards |
| 2 | Basic | Approaching grade-level standards |
| 1 | Below Basic | Below grade-level standards |
| NA | Not Assessed | Skill not assessed during the grading period |
This system helps teachers and parents clearly understand a student’s progress toward mastering specific learning skills and competencies.
3. Traditional Grading Scale (Middle School and High School) #
In Middle School and High School, student performance is measured using a percentage and letter-grade system.
| Grade | Percentage Range | Description |
|---|---|---|
| A | 93 – 100% | Excellent |
| A- | 90 – 92% | Very Good |
| B+ | 87 – 89% | Good |
| B | 83 – 86% | Above Average |
| B- | 80 – 82% | Slightly Above Average |
| C+ | 77 – 79% | Average |
| C | 73 – 76% | Satisfactory |
| C- | 70 – 72% | Below Average |
| D+ | 67 – 69% | Poor |
| D | 63 – 66% | Very Poor |
| D- | 60 – 62% | Barely Passing |
| F | Below 60% | Failing |
Grades are calculated using a combination of:
- Tests and quizzes
- Assignments and homework
- Projects and presentations
- Class participation
- Semester examinations
4. Promotion and Retention Decisions #
Elementary School #

Students who do not meet expected standards may be required to:
- Participate in academic support programs
- Attend summer learning programs
- Repeat the grade if necessary for academic development
Middle School and High School #
Promotion is based on:
- Successful completion of required courses
- Meeting minimum grade requirements
- Earning sufficient academic credits
Students who receive failing grades in core subjects may be required to:
- Retake the course
- Complete summer coursework
- Receive additional academic support
Final promotion decisions are made by school administration in consultation with teachers and parents.
5. Report Cards and Progress Reports #
AISE provides regular updates on student progress through:
- Quarterly Report Cards
- Mid-Term Progress Reports (MTPR)
- Parent–Teacher Conferences
These reports help families monitor academic progress and support students in achieving their educational goals.
